This post covers the creation of VMs with resources from the ESXi host. I am installing Windows Server 2008 R2 so that I can cover its installation part also...
Login to our host using vSphere client...
Choose a name for your VM....
Next thing is Storage to be used, here in my case I have datastore of 32GB available from 40GB space of ESXi host...
Type of Operating System...
Next it is Network, we can add number of NICs (Network Interface Card) depending upon our requirement... Here I am selecting two NICs....
Then size of the disk to be assigned to our VM...
It is almost done with the resource allocation part...
After Clicking Finish...
Now it's time to Power on our VM....
Here if you observe the status bar, there is a entry related to "reconfigure virtual machine" which is completed. This is because the minimum disk space requirement for Windows 2008 is 16GB, so I reconfigured it...
Now check the status of "Power On VM"....
Then right click on our VM, we can see Open Console... Click on it...
Select the location of ISO image file of Windows Server R2...
Go with the desired location and keyboard layout...
Click on Install Now...
Select desired installation method..
Accept the License agreement...
Install/Upgrade the Windows..
Select the disk...
Followed by the basic installation steps of Windows...
Ready for the first restart...
Loading Windows...
Final step to complete the installation...
Getting ready for initial use....
Enter the login credentials...
Preparing desktop....
Login to our host using vSphere client...
Click on the New Virtual Machine...
Selecting the configuration.... "Typical"...

Done with the installation of Windows Server 2008 R2.... We can see 11GB of our 20GB hard disk is occupied by OS.
